There are a few different ways rugs can be effectively added to living rooms, each with their own distinct style, purpose and feel. Today we discuss each of them to provide a shopping guide for choosing a living room rug.
Living room rugs can serve many purposes - from adding warmth to cold tiles or floorboards, to adding style, personality, and bringing all the room's decor together.
Decor:
Firstly, all other decor elements of your living space should be considered when choosing the style and colours of your rug. In terms of colours, to create a soothing, relaxed atmosphere, try a neutral coloured rug. For a sense of fun / play or for something a bit more moody, opt for bright or bolder colours and patterns.
Materials:
In terms of materials, if your living room will see a lot of foot traffic, and you need something low maintenance, stain resistant, and durable, synthetic fibres such as polypropylene will be a good option. For a more luxurious look and feel in a lower traffic living room space, a wool or shaggy rug would be the perfect addition.
Sizes:
Lastly, measuring the size of your room, and the space you want your rug to occupy, is critical, so have your tape measure ready. Generally speaking, bigger is better when it comes to rug size for living rooms, as large rugs make a more impressive statement for the room.
Also, our new augmented reality viewer, with accurate rug sizing, is now available on most product pages on our website - this will allow you to view each rug in your living room - all you need is a smart phone, and on the product page, just click the "View in my room" button (Please view on a mobile web browser app such as Safari or Chrome rather than through a social media apps' browser such as Instagram or Facebook, as the AR viewer will not work in those browsers).
Depending on the size of the lounge room overall, the size of the rug that will be best suited to the below options will change. Rectangular sizes are well suited for each option, although round rugs can also provide a nice feature element for a lounge room when styled in front of lounge furniture, possibly underneath a round coffee table for example.
When choosing the styling of your living room rug, consider these options:
